CONSTRAINTS
There are several constraints to this project. These includes:
-
Language barrier: Secondary data obtained for the project is available in Japanese and I have no knowledge in this language. The use of Google Translate might provide incomplete results, thus it is necessary to have a translator to assist.

-
Ownership: The secondary data available is compiled by an individual and permission to use this data needs to be obtained. Data obtained for the research, however, is from YouTube and NicoNico and might be subjected to ownership restrictions.

-
Privacy requirements: For the survey, it is necessary to obtain permission to use the data provided from the participants and apply the appropriate data protection measures (passwords and backup) to ensure the agreed privacy.

-
Technical & Time: Qualitative data will take a lot of time and human effort to code and put into a database. Additionally, graphs obtained are photos and thus raw data might not be available in the right format for manipulation. Raw data available online (view counts, comment counts, timestamps, etc.) might take a lot of time to compile and gather due to the large number of videos and keywords.
SCOPE
The research will be looking into Vocaloid popularity in two communities: English-speaking and Japanese-speaking as these are the two largest communities. The number of songs uploaded will be investigated on NicoNico – the largest video sharing website in Japan and the main platform for music producers to upload music. YouTube will not be considered as most uploads on this platform are reprints of the original version on NicoNico.
