Vocaloid Popularity:
An Investigation
FINDINGS
FINDINGS
Compiled together, the data analyzed all depicted a common trend: a general decrease in activity, interest and popularity on Vocaloid-related activities across all platforms, reflecting reduced audience interaction.
Therefore, it is safe to conclude that there is an observed decrease in popularity of Vocaloid culture on the investigated platforms. Taking into account the survey and secondary graph results, the main reasons for the decrease of interest can be put down to a decreasing number of new original songs being uploaded, new good songs and new songs by already popular producers.
On an additional note, while there is a decrease in total songs uploaded, the number of songs uploaded with voicebank Hatsune Miku has remained relatively stable.
CONCLUSION
Altogether, the findings of this investigation support the hypothesis that "The popularity of Vocaloid culture has started to decrease since 2012 with less audience interactions because there have been less songs uploaded". It is also noteworthy, however, that the findings also supports other reasons for decreased popularity, namely a decreasing number of new good songs and a decreasing number of new songs by already popular producers.
Drawing from the survey responses, it is understood that the popularity of Vocaloid culture in its original sense (ie. Fans producing and supporting music, art and videos) has witnessed a decrease as the trend is past its peak, but Vocaloid culture in general has changed and shifted into other forms, including mainstream popularity (usage by mainstream musicians, appearance on TV shows, additional concerts) and a larger focus on the voicebank Hatsune Miku rather than all available Vocaloid voicebanks as a whole (this is also supported by the secondary graph depicting general new upload decrease but a stable upload rate for Hatsune Miku songs). This is a possible explanation to the starkly divided opinion of the community regarding perceived decrease in Vocaloid culture popularity. Further investigations can look into the popularity of Vocaloid outside traditional platforms, additional study of the Japanese-speaking community, statistics on songs uploaded by popular producers and greater analysis into Hatsune Miku and her extent of influence on the culture in general.
